A Ketubah With No Divorce Clause

At the Shluchim Convention, a shlucha from New Orleans shared a powerful story about Hurricane Katrina.

When the hurricane hit, they had to leave their home quickly. There was no time to pack everything. So she asked herself:

If I could take only one thing with me, what would it be?

Her answer was simple: the ketubah.

Because a ketubah is not just a piece of paper. It represents a commitment, a covenant, and a relationship that endures through everything.

This Shabbat, the last Shabbat of the year, we read Parshat Nitzavim-Vayeilech:

“You are standing today, all of you… to enter into the covenant of Hashem, your G-d.”

Our relationship with Hashem is also a covenant. The Torah is like the ketubah between Hashem and the Jewish people.

And here is the most beautiful part:

There is no divorce clause in Hashem’s ketubah.

We may have made mistakes. We may have fallen short. We may have drifted away. But Hashem never walks away from us. The covenant remains.

That is the message of this final Shabbat of the year:

You are not starting the New Year alone.
You are not starting over as a stranger.
You are a child of Hashem—and that relationship is forever.

The Torah says, “You are standing today, all of you.”

After everything we have been through, we are still standing.

May we enter the New Year feeling that love, that connection, and that unbreakable bond with Hashem—and may it give us the strength to make the coming year our best one yet.

Ketivah V’Chatimah Tovah, Shana Tova U’Metuka, and Shabbat Shalom!
