When the Fireworks Fade The Light That Illuminated America

This weekend, the United States celebrates 250 years of independence. For a quarter of a millennium, America has been a symbol of freedom, allowing Jewish life and Torah communities to flourish.

This year also marks 97 years since the historic first visit of the Previous Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Yosef Yitzchak Schneersohn, to the United States in 1929. At that time, there were approximately 250 synagogues with Chabad roots across America. When news spread that the Rebbe was coming, Jews from every background flocked to see him.

The Rebbe came to raise support for the persecuted Jews of Communist Russia. But only weeks after his arrival, the Great Depression began. As thousands of Jews lost their livelihoods, the Rebbe shifted his mission. Instead of asking people to give, he gave them something even greater—faith, hope, and strength.

What was the secret of his influence?

In this week's Torah portion, Hashem tells Moshe, "You shall place some of your splendor upon him." Rashi explains that this "splendor" was the spiritual light that shone from Moshe's face. More than wisdom, Moshe passed on an inner light that inspired everyone around him.

That was the light people saw in the Previous Rebbe. Newspapers described his unforgettable face and penetrating eyes. They saw a leader who carried the pain of every Jew while radiating faith, hope, and boundless love.

When the Fourth of July fireworks fade, one light remains—the light of Torah, faith, and love for every Jew. May we each add to that light until it shines throughout the world with the coming of Moshiach, speedily in our days.

בסוף השבוע הזה תחגוג ארצות הברית 250 שנה לעצמאותה. במשך רבע אלף שנה הייתה אמריקה סמל של חירות ואפשרה ליהודים לבנות קהילות, בתי כנסת ומוסדות תורה.

השנה מציינים גם 97 שנה לביקורו ההיסטורי הראשון של הרבי הקודם, רבי יוסף יצחק שניאורסון, בארצות הברית בשנת תרפ"ט (1929). באותם ימים פעלו ברחבי המדינה כ-250 בתי כנסת בעלי שורשים חב"דיים. כשהתפרסם שהרבי מגיע, נהרו אליו יהודים מכל החוגים, ואלפים המתינו לראותו ולשמוע את דבריו.

הרבי הגיע כדי לגייס תמיכה ליהודי רוסיה שסבלו מרדיפות הקומוניסטים. אולם זמן קצר לאחר בואו פרץ המשבר הכלכלי הגדול. אלפי יהודים איבדו את פרנסתם, והרבי שינה את מוקד ביקורו. במקום לבקש מהאנשים לתת, הוא העניק להם את המתנה הגדולה ביותר – אמונה, ביטחון ותקווה.

מה היה סוד כוחו?

בפרשת פנחס מצווה הקב"ה את משה: "ונתת מהודך עליו." רש"י מסביר שה"הוד" הוא קרן האור הרוחנית שהאירה מפניו של משה. לא רק תורה והנהגה עברו ליהושע, אלא גם אור פנימי שהשפיע על כל מי שפגש בו.

זהו האור שאנשים ראו גם אצל הרבי. העיתונים תיארו את פניו כבלתי נשכחות ואת עיניו כחודרות אל הלב. הם הרגישו אדם שנשא את כאבו של כל יהודי והקרין אהבת ישראל, אמונה ותקווה.

כאשר זיקוקי יום העצמאות כבים, נשאר האור האמיתי – אור התורה, האמונה ואהבת ישראל. זהו האור שכל אחד מאיתנו יכול להוסיף לעולם, עד שנזכה במהרה לאור הגדול של הגאולה השלמה בביאת משיח צדקנו.
